🗺 Location and History
Mezapos is located approximately 18 kilometers south of Areopolis, in a charming spot in the historic region of Messini. The famous archaeologist William Martin Leake recognized Mezapos as the safest port in Mani. The village boasts a rich historical heritage with several Byzantine churches, such as Panagia Vlacherna in Fokaloto, a church from the 12th and 13th centuries. Additionally, in Mezapos, you can find the Sassaros Tower, an imposing tower that belonged to Nikolaos Sassaros, a pirate who operated in the area during the 18th century.
🏰 Tigani Castle
Directly opposite Mezapos, you will find the ruins of the historic Tigani Castle (also known as Megali Maini). This castle, likely built during the time of Justinian in the 6th century, is situated on a narrow strip of land about 1,700 meters long. To reach Tigani, you can start from the settlement of Agia Kyriaki and walk for about an hour, enjoying a unique hike that will lead you to the ruins of this significant historical monument.
