Monastery of Saints Anargyroi

  • Monasteries

The Monastery of Saints Anargyroi in Laconia is a paradise of history and spiritual awakening, nestled in the embrace of the mountain peaks of Parnonas. The oldest monastery in Laconia, this monastery extends across a uniquely beautiful plateau, at an altitude of about one thousand meters, surrounded by the tranquility of nature and the aura of spirituality.

The presence of the monastery since the 9th century AD is a significant testimony to the spiritual heritage of the region. The Life of Saint Elias the Younger, also known as the Sicilian, highlights the deep religious legacy that forms the foundation of the monastery. Furthermore, the golden bull of Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos in 1293 confirms the monastery's important position in the area.

The architectural excellence of the monastery reflects late Byzantine mastery, with its single-spaced, cross-shaped, domed church serving as a masterpiece of ecclesiastical art that withstands the test of time. The iconography of the church by the Kakavas family is an example of high art and spiritual awakening.

The Monastery of Saints Anargyroi did not emerge unscathed from the difficulties of the centuries. From the siege by Ibrahim in 1826 to the destruction and looting during the Nazi occupation in 1943, the monastery faced many trials. However, despite the destruction, the spiritual renewal of the monastery never ceased.

The monastery's contribution to the Revolution of 1821 is monumental. Apart from operating a secret school and providing refuge for the poor and persecuted, the monks actively participated in the liberation struggle, dignifyingly facing the attacks of the enemies.

The monastery's celebration in memory of Saints Cosmas and Damian and their mother Theodoti is a highly significant religious celebration, renewing the monastery's bond with the spiritual heritage of the saints. Despite the weathering difficulties, the monastery continues to be a bright beacon of spirituality and faith in the heart of Laconia.
