The Coumantaros Art Gallery of Sparta is the first branch of the National Gallery outside Athens and is a significant cultural center in the region. It was founded in 1982, thanks to the generous donation of the neoclassical building and collection by Ioannis Koumantaros, made by his children, Dolly Goulandris and Georgios Koumantaros.
On the ground floor of the gallery, the I. Koumantaros collection is housed, consisting of works by European painters with various themes dating from the 16th to the 19th century. This collection offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience European art through the eyes of the most important painters of that era.
The first floor of the gallery was completely renovated in 2018, creating a new permanent exhibition of works from the National Gallery. This exhibition provides a concise overview of the history of modern Greek art, highlighting the main artistic trends and significant themes developed from the early years of the Greek state's creation to the present day.
The permanent exhibition includes seventy-two works, most of which are paintings (70) and a few sculptures (12) by significant Greek artists. The themes of the works cover a wide range: historical painting, portraits, depictions of antiquity, genre scenes, symbolism, plein air painting, explorations of Greek light and identity, as well as abstract and abstract art.
