Mοni Panagía Giatrissa

The Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Yiatrissa in Laconia is a sacred destination that combines history, religious faith, and natural beauty. It is located in an idyllic location at an altitude of 1040 meters, offering stunning views of the surroundings of Vardounia.

The history of the monastery dates back to ancient times. Initially, there was a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena at this location, possibly also referred to as Yiatrissa. According to ancient myths and historical texts, the ancient Greeks chose this location for their settlement and the construction of their temples.

Later on, the temple was converted into a Christian church around 382 AD. Over the centuries, the monastery was temporarily abandoned due to wars and attacks, but around 1632, Kyriakoulis Eliaphentis and his wife Maria decided to become monks there to dedicate their lives to faith and to build a new monastery on the ruins of the ancient temple.

Legend has it that Maria Eliaphentis became pregnant shortly after the completion of the temple's construction and gave birth to their second child a year later. Since then, Panagia Yiatrissa has been an important spiritual and cultural pillar for Vardounia.

The feast of Panagia Yiatrissa is celebrated on September 8th and is an occasion for the gathering of pilgrims from across the region and beyond. Visitors can discover the spiritual atmosphere of the place, enjoy the breathtaking nature of the area, and delve into the history and culture of Laconia.
