Byzantine Basilica ''St. Nikonos''

  • Αrchaeological site

As one ascends the cobblestone path leading from the market area to the acropolis, the visitor encounters on their left an impressive complex from the early Byzantine era. At its center stands a tripartite basilica with three apses to the east and a narthex to the west. The aisles are divided by columns placed on high pedestals.

The basilica features a threefold Holy Bema, slightly protruding on the sides. In the middle apse, a semicircular synthronon is arranged for the bishop and priests to sit during the services, with a circular space between the synthronon and the apse wall, serving as a passage to facilitate the clergy's movement to the Holy Bema during the divine liturgy.

There are still no secure conclusions regarding the reconstruction of the monument, while its dating ranges from the latter half of the 6th century to the 7th century. Later additions likely include the northern compartment and the attached staircases on the southern and western sides. During the middle Byzantine period, a cruciform building and a longitudinal structure were added to the west.

Initially, the monument was identified with the church of the Savior, which, according to the texts of the Life and Testament of the Holy Nikephoros the Confessor, was built by the holy man himself in the late 10th century. Today, it is considered to be the cathedral of Lacedaemon.
